Actuarial Science Scholarship Fund
The Actuarial Science Scholarship was established in 2006 by alumni and friends of
the College of Natural Science. It is intended for students with a specialization
or major in the Actuarial Program. The purpose of this scholarship is given in the
following statement:
This award is intended to encourage undergraduate students interested in an actuarial profession. Recipients shall be deemed worthy on the basis of actuarial coursework, passage of at least one of the National Society of Actuaries Exams, a letter of recommendation from an actuarial instructor and the acquisition of a summer actuarial internship.
The Paul Buben Actuarial Science Scholarship
Paul Buben established this scholarship in recognition of the rigorous academic curriculum,
personal talent and dedication required to earn a degree in Actuarial Science from
Michigan State University. This scholarship intends to recognize the outstanding academic
achievement required to succeed in Actuarial Science and help students achieve academic
excellence at Michigan State University.
Paul Buben was born in Flint, Michigan, and graduated from Michigan State University in 1950 with a bachelor of arts in mathematics. He received his Masters in Actuarial Science from the University of Michigan.
Actuarial Science Exam Prize
The Actuarial Science Exam Prize is an award for students who are successful in passing
actuarial science exams administered by either the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty
Actuarial Society. The Department of Mathematics will select award recipients. Generally,
recipients will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis with awards to be
effective within 45 days of documentation of successful completion. The number of
awards made each given year and the amount of the awards will be based upon available

The William and Lydia Falk Actuarial Science Scholarship
The William and Lydia Falk Scholarship was established in 2012 for U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have a major (or preferred major) in Actuarial Science. The recipient should be in good standing in the Honors College, demonstrate a financial need, and have passed at least one actuarial examination offered by the Society of Actuaries or the Casualty Actuarial Society. Awardees are normally selected during the Spring semester with awards to be effective the following Fall semester. The number of awards will be based on the available expendable amounts in that year. Awards are generally credited during the tuition payment process.
The J. K. Billman, Jr., M.D. Actuarial Science Scholarship
J. K. Billman, Jr., MD created this Actuarial Science scholarship in 2014 for those Actuarial Science students within the Department of Mathematics, College of Natural Science. Recipients must have junior class standing. The award is renewable for up to two years as long as the recipient remains in good academic standing. The awardees will generally be selected during the Spring semester with awards being effective the following Fall semester. If there are no qualified actuarial science majors, the scholarship may be awarded to a student with junior class standing majoring in Mathematics. The number of awards will be based on the available expendable amounts in that year. Awards are generally credited during the tuition payment process.
