Actuarial Science at MSU

For those who wish to prepare for a career path in actuarial science, MSU offers undergraduate students an Actuarial Science major or specialization.

The Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics and Probability administer an undergraduate program of study leading to a Bachelor of Science (BS) Major in Actuarial Science. Our BS degree program provides students a comprehensive training to acquire the needed skills to start a career path in actuarial science. The program reflects the interdisciplinary nature of actuarial science and is also designed to prepare students for the preliminary examinations of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). In addition, it offers the opportunity to acquire skills such as computing, communication, and work experience that are often sought by actuarial employers.

Alternatively, MSU offers a specialization in Actuarial Science for students who are enrolled in any bachelor’s degree program in the university. This specialization is administered by the Department of Mathematics within the College of Natural Science. It complements a number of major fields such as mathematics, statistics and probability, finance and economics. The requirements are flexible enough to meet the needs and interests of the student. Just as the BS in Actuarial Science degree program, it is intended to prepare students for work in insurance companies, banks, investment firms, government work, hospitals and business firms where there is a need to weigh the financial consequences of risk.
